The 48th SNP Meeting

Invited Lecture

Large Deformation of Lipid Membranes:

From the Golgi Apparatus to the Malaria

Abstract. I will talk about the coupling between plate mechanics and material properties in the mechanism  involved in the golgi apparatus in the cell and also how malaria penetrate cell membranes. I will start by showing how biology is still investigating the origin of the golgi functions and I will show how using a simple elastic model I will describe the strong coupling between geometry, materials and elasticity. I will also talk about a novel plastic deformation in lipid membranes when the defects density percolate. These defects are formed by the in-plane polymerization of lipid membranes.
